The Eye: Anatomy and Light Sensors
In the center of the eye, there are two types of light receptors; rods and cones. Rods are responsible for the perception of black and white while cones are responsible for color perception. The fovea is a region in the retina where there are only cones, providing sharp vision when looking at something straight ahead.
The most sensitive part of the eye is called the Retina. It is a highly specialized part of the eye responsible for the transduction of light signals to the brain. Commonly described to be similar to the “film” in traditional cameras, it is basically a membrane containing millions of light receptors called rods and cones that are grouped into photoreceptor cells.
The retina consists of five basic layers:
1) The outer pigmented Retinal Pigment Epithelium layer.
2) The Inner Layer with photoreceptor cells and blood vessels is supplied by the Choroid.
3) The Outer Plexiform Layer containing horizontal, bipolar, amacrine, and ganglion cells that connect to the optic nerve.
4) The Inner Plexiform Layer contains more of these cells, various glial cells, and the retinal oxygen supply (retinal vessels).
5) The most inner layer is the nerve fiber layer containing ganglion cell axons that connect to ganglionic centers in the brain.

Other parts of the eye like the lens, cornea, iris, ciliary body, retina, optic, and the Inner Nuclear Layer of the retina are important in establishing a healthy supply of nutrients and oxygen to the entire retina. For example, The lens is responsible for focusing light entering from without into a more convenient direction relative to the photoreceptors in the retina. Much like how light receptors work together as a team, so too must other parts of the eye function together for the retina to perform properly.
The eye has no pain receptors so most patients do not experience pain while being treated by our retina specialists. In some situations, your doctor will inject a local anesthetic to numb the area of your retina before surgery is conducted in order to help minimize discomfort. It is best if you follow all instructions from your doctor to the retinal gland.
